The Augusta region was nationally known for its wine during the 19th century, but Prohibition halted the state’s winemaking for decades. Then, in the late 1960s and early 1970s, a few pioneering souls began to refurbish the old vineyards and winery buildings.

One of these pioneers was Clayton Byers, who founded Montelle Vineyards in 1970. The winery was later purchased in 1998 by Tony Kooyumjian, owner and winemaker for Augusta Winery at that time. In 2021, both Montelle and Augusta wineries were acquired by Hoffmann Family of Companies as part of a reinvigoration project of the Augusta area. After working with Tony for a few years, the winemaking torch was then passed on to Colin Pennington.

The secret to our success in producing outstanding wines is our vineyards. The Augusta area was designated as the first viticultural area in the United States because of our unique soils, microclimate, and history. It is our mission to produce wines that exemplify the uniqueness of this 15 square mile area.

Our philosophy is to farm our vineyards with a respect for the land and the environment. As a result, our wines are fresh, fragrant, focused, and well balanced, but most of all, express the uniqueness of our vineyards. It is this attention to detail that has enabled us to produce wines that are continuously recognized for their uniqueness and superior quality.

In addition to our wines, Montelle is also the first winery in Missouri with a distillery, producing brandies from our grapes and occasionally small batch brandies from fruits such as peach, pear, plum, and cherry.  Stepping into our tasting room will transform you into a complete state of relaxation. Our friendly and knowledgeable staff will help you select the perfect wine for any occasion.

We also aspire to reveal the pleasures of pairing fine wine and food. Our Klondike Café offers fresh, high quality cuisine to complement our wines. Choose from a wide selection of gourmet wraps, salads, sandwiches and pizzas to be enjoyed on our vast deck, where it is easy to lose yourself in a magnificent view of the Missouri River Valley.

Colin Pennington

Colin is the Head Wine Maker for the Hoffmann Family of Companies and oversees all 4 of their Augusta, Missouri wineries  and production of their wines.

James Hogan

James Hogan, our cellar master, works diligently to ensure that the wines are nurtured through each step of production and that the facilities are kept immaculately clean and sanitary. Because we are a small production facility, we are able to separate the wines from each vineyard and blend them in such a way that we can achieve perfect balance and expression.

Paul Hopen

The secret to our success in producing outstanding, terroir driven wines is our vineyards. The vineyards are managed by lifelong viticulturist Paul Hopen. Our philosophy is to farm our vineyards with a respect for the land and the environment. We use sustainable farming methods and, as a result, our wines are fresh, fragrant, focused, and well balanced but most of all express the uniqueness of our vineyards.
